Here are some handy hints and timelines to help keep that move a smoother move!
A Week Before
Arrange for any furniture or possessions that you are not taking with you to be sold or disposed of.
Plan Work out a plan of your new home. Showing where you would like things in advance will save you having to move heavy furniture into place later on.
Run down freezer contents.
Check the garage, shed, under the house and loft/attic … you don’t want to forget anything.
Cancel the deliveries It’s always best to have these arranged well in advance so there’s no last-minute rush and the final bill can be ready and waiting for you. Here’s a quick checklist for you:
Newspapers
Magazine subscriptions
Australia Post mail can be directed for up to 12 months
Disconnection and Reconnection The Public Utilities Departments will need a bit of notice to arrange the disconnection and reconnection. Make sure you arrange things well in advance. It’s also a good idea to confirm the arrangements a few days before the big move. Make sure you take care of:
Gas
Electricity
Telephone
If you decide to move with Taylor’s we can facilitate the disconnection and reconnection of these utilities, through ‘Utility One’. ‘Utility One’ is an organisation that offers a utility connection service that saves you time and stress. They can connect your telephone, electricity and gas on your behalf at no cost to you. Apart from the normal connection fees and bonds charged by the utility providers, there are no additional charges for you to pay.
Send friends and family a card to notify them of your change of address. Taylor’s will offer to you complimentary notification cards to make this task stress-free. Ask our consultant about these cards when booking your removal.
Two Day Before You Move
Arrange for your valuable documents, jewellery, money, etc to be moved separately. These should not be included with household goods when moving.
Arrange for an electrician to disconnect any special light fittings you want to take with you.
Wash and dry all dirty clothes.
Take down any curtains or blinds you intend to take with you.
Dispose of garden chemicals, paints, fuels and other flammables (matches/lighters). These items are considered too dangerous to transport or store. Many local councils provide disposal facilities for such items do not pour them down the drain.
The Day Before You Move
Wash and dry all dishes for packing.
Check all drawers, cupboards and storage areas…you don’t want to leave anything behind.
Plan your moving day.
Leave your forwarding address and contact number for the new occupants of your house.
Sort out any items that are not to be moved, so they don’t accidentally end up on the truck.
The fridge One of the big problems with fridges and freezers is this when they’re turned off and closed up, even for a couple of days, there’s a big chance of ending up with mould and odours. Here’s what to do turn off the fridge the day before and when it’s been wiped out hang a couple of TEA BAGS, (yes tea bags!), in the fridge and close the door up tight. The reason for this little trick of the trade is that tea bags soak up any moisture left in the fridge. If the door is left propped open, there is a chance of both damaging the door seal and putting unnecessary pressure on the hinges.
Give the pets the day off One of the things we’ve noticed over the years is that family pets get very disturbed when someone starts moving the furniture out of their home. We’ve even had animals try to follow the furniture into the truck. Perhaps the easiest solution in the long run is to put them in a good kennel for the duration. That way, your pets can rejoin you when everything is sorted out and they’ve got a home again. Taylor’s can even help you with these arrangements, so you will know your pets are in good hands.
Put together an “Essentials Kit” containing items you require immediately:
Tea and coffee
Kettle
Mugs
Paper towels
Toys for the kids
Kids pj’s
Baby food
Change of clothing
Mobile charger
Bathroom essentials
Medicines
Remote control
Bed legs
Keys
On The Day
Advise the removal crew what items you will require first on arrival, as they will pack these items last.
At Taylor’s we have recognised the need to access certain essential items quickly at the destination; items such as keys, remote controls, nuts and bolts and bed legs. So to enable the crew to find these items speedily we have created the ‘Priority Box’. This box will contain these items and it will be packed last so it is off first at the destination.
Check the garden, so that you haven’t missed anything.
